Fire in the Morning: A Pictorial Exhibit of the Mexican-American History in Orange County
Artist and curator Yolanda Morelos Alvarez has created a fascinating illustrative display that documents the life of 50 vibrant Mexican-American communities that were established in Southern California during the time of the 1910 Revolution in Mexico. This wonderful amazing historical study depicts the largely unknown history of Mexican-Americans in Orange County by featuring the population’s economic struggles, civil rights, social activities, the floods that destroyed much of La Jolla in Placentia, the landmark Mendez vs. Westminster case which ended legal school segregation, and more. The historic photos span the early 1900s through World War II.

The exhibit can be viewed during the Civic Center’s normal business hours, Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., and alternate Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

An Opening Reception will take place Tuesday, September 10, 4:30 p.m., in the Irvine Civic Center lobby located at 1 Civic Center Plaza, immediately followed by a city council presentation at 5 p.m. in the council chamber. Reservations are required due to limited seating. Call (949) 724-6606 for more information.
