Lieutenant Tom Allan and Officer Joshua Assayag Take the Concept of “Ridesharing” to New Heights

4/6/2011

On Wednesday, April 5, 2011, Lieutenant Tom Allan (LtCol, USMCR) returned home from his assignment as an Action Officer to the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.

Although it is not unusual for Lieutenant Allan to leave for this type of assignment, his travel arrangements were unique for this trip.  He left on Thursday, March 31, 2011 from March Air Force Base in Riverside aboard a USAF C17 Globemaster piloted by our own Reserve Officer Josh Assayag (Captain, USAF Reserves).  The “hop” from Riverside to Delaware’s Andrews Air Force Base had a stop at Travis Air Force Base in Sacramento.

Lieutenant Allan’s assignment as an Action Officer at the Pentagon was related to Crisis Management for the Japan Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear incident.  Officer Assayag’s mission was as a MedEvac.  His crew picked up a medical team at Travis Air Force Base on the way to Andrews Air Force Base where they picked up patients.  The next day, they flew the patients back to their home bases around the country.

Lt. Allan had a seat in the cockpit throughout the trip.  He was impressed with the flight, and described the landing as, “perfect”, despite the challenging conditions.  “It was during a rain storm, at night, with only 500 feet of visibility.” Lt. Allan said, “We couldn’t even see the runway lights until the plane was touching down.”   “Josh is a great pilot ”.
