On Monday, January 24, 2011, Chief Maggard swore in Matthew August, Bret Milovich, and Michael Kent as Police Sergeants in a ceremony at City Hall.  The audience was packed with friends, family and City personnel eager to congratulate the new Sergeants and wish them well. These promotions fill the vacancies created by the recent Lieutenant promotions.  Each of the newly promoted Sergeants will be assigned to Patrol Operations. 

Sergeant August is a 17-year law enforcement officer.  He began his career as a Police Explorer with the Laguna Beach Police Department in 1990 and became a sworn officer there in 1994. In 2005, he transferred to the Irvine Police Department.  He has worked assignments in Traffic, Field Training, Investigations, and as an Explorer Advisor with both agencies and currently serves as a Crisis Negotiator on the Irvine Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team. Sgt August has received numerous awards throughout his career.  At Laguna Beach, he received the Rookie of the Year, Police Officer of the Year, Meritorious Service, Life Saving, and Employee of the Quarter.  He has continued his exemplary service with the Irvine Police Department, earning the Employee of the Quarter award in 2009.  Sergeant August is currently completing work towards a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.

Sergeant Milovich began his career as a Police Officer for the City of Long Beach in 1996.  He served there as a patrol officer, a Field Training Officer, an Internal Affairs Investigator, and was a member of their Community Policing Team.  In 2006, he transferred to the Irvine Police Department where he has served as a Patrol Officer and as a Field Training Officer.  He came to Irvine as a highly decorated officer, receiving the Long Beach Police Department’s Medal of Valor, the California state Medal of Valor, and was their Employee of the Quarter in 2003.  Sergeant Milovich holds a bachelors degree from California State University, Fullerton in Public Administration.

Sergeant Kent began his law enforcement career with the Irvine Police Department as a Police Explorer in 1992. He made the transition to sworn officer in 2003.  Since becoming an officer, Sergeant Kent has served as a Patrol Officer, a Field Training Officer, an Explorer Advisor, and a Detective in both General Investigations and Special Investigations.  He has also been a member of the Honor Guard, the Special Weapons and Tactics Team, and the Joint Hazardous Assessment Team.  Sergeant Kent has received numerous awards for service, including the Medal of Courage, the Employee of the Quarter, the Life Saving Award, the Meritorious Service Award, three Unit Commendations, and two Colonel Laurence J. Stein Awards for outstanding investigative work.   He is currently completing his last semester of coursework for his Bachelor’s Degree in Communications at California State University, Fullerton.
