CHIEF MAGGARD SWEARS IN TWO NEW COMMANDERS

On Wednesday, January 12, 2011, Chief Maggard swore in John Hare as the University Area Commander and Barry Aninag as the Crossroads Area Commander during a ceremony at City Hall.  The promotions fill the vacancies created by recent retirements. These two newest members of the Irvine Police Department's executive management team will join Portola Area Commander Mike Hamel, completing the geographic policing leadership team.

Commander Hare is an experienced law enforcement officer with over 25 years of service to the community.  As an Officer, he worked as a Motor, Narcotics Investigator, and Field Training Officer.  He promoted to Sergeant in 2003 and Lieutenant in 2006.  As a Lieutenant, he supervised the Investigations Bureau and represented the Department as the Press Information Officer.  Commander Hare holds several degrees including a Bachelors of Science in Management, a Master of Arts in Business Administration, and a Doctorate in Management.  Additionally, he has continued his formal education and professional development through programs offered by prestigious institutions such as The Harvard Business School, Cornell University and the University of Notre Dame, bringing a wealth of knowledge to his new leadership role in the University Area.

Commander Aninag began his career with the Irvine Police Department in 1985.  As he rose to the rank of Lieutenant, in 2006
, Commander Aninag served in virtually every area of the department including, Patrol Operations, the Field Training Program, General and Specialized Investigations, Operations Support and, the Special Weapons and Tactics Team.  Commander Aninag holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Criminal Administration from Chapman University and a Masters’ in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix.  Commander Aninag has a long history of significant contributions to the organization and looks forward to the new leadership opportunities as an Area Commander.  

Area Commanders are a vital component to the Department’s geographic policing structure.  Each Commander has full oversight of an area including Patrol Operations, Investigations, intervention activities, prevention programs, and community relationships. Area Commanders focus on the specific needs of an area and have the ability to coordinate proven strategies, utilizing the area’s resources, to address those needs.
