Officer Jon Jarrett receives the Exemplary Performance Award at the 8th Annual Golden Badge Awards

On Friday, October 29th, the Golden Badge Awards banquet was held at the Irvine Marriott. The Golden Badge Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening relations within California’s law enforcement community, as well as between members of law enforcement and the community they protect and serve.  Each year the Golden Badge Foundation hosts an awards banquet to honor law enforcement officers and civilians for heroic acts of bravery and deeds.  This year, Irvine Police Officer Jon Jarrett was given the Exemplary Performance Award for rescuing an elderly disabled woman from her burning home.

On January 10, 2010, at 2:05 p.m., Officer Jarrett was patrolling the area of Bake and Muirlands.  He saw a column of black and grey smoke coming from the area of a mobile home park on Muirlands in the City of Lake Forest.  He immediately requested the assistance of the Orange County Fire Authority and Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

When Officer Jarrett arrived in the area, he found the front of a mobile home engulfed in flames.  Citizens outside the burning home told him there was an elderly disabled woman trapped inside.  Officer Jarrett ran to the rear of the home and observed two citizens attempting to assist the elderly disabled woman out of the home, although her wheelchair was stuck inside the laundry room.  Officer Jarrett entered the smoke filled home and found it extremely difficult to breathe.  The smoke also diminished his vision to the point he could only see a span of two to three feet.  As he bent over to assist the elderly woman, he saw beneath the layer of smoke that flames were quickly burning the front wall and furniture in the adjoining room.  The two citizens in the home with him made attempts to control the fire with a fire extinguisher and rescue the owner’s dog.

With the smoke and flames behind him, Officer Jarrett was finally able to push the elderly woman to the doorway to exit.  A man outside the door then assisted Officer Jarrett in carrying the victim in her wheelchair out of the burning home and down the stairs to safety.
