IRVINE, CA (August 28, 2014): On Friday, August 29, the Irvine Police Department will partner with the Tustin Police Department to conduct a sobriety checkpoint in the area of Jamboree Road and Barranca Parkway from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
This checkpoint is being jointly operated in support of the “Avoid the 38” campaign and is part of our mutual commitment to reducing injuries and deaths caused by impaired drivers.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration research has shown high visibility enforcement (HVE) can reduce drunken driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent. This highly visible sobriety checkpoint is being advertised to deter impaired drivers, encourage the use of sober designated drivers and to bring increased awareness to the consequences of impaired driving.
The checkpoint will be clearly marked and vehicles will be selected to be checked on a pre-set basis to ensure objectivity. Motorists will be greeted and given information about impaired driving. Driver’s licenses will be checked and trained officers will direct impaired drivers to a secondary area for further evaluation. Most motorists will experience little delay, if any at all.
Funding for this checkpoint is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of the Orange County “Avoid the 38” Driving Under the Influence Campaign.
