The City of Irvine will release periodic alerts with information about the Sand Canyon Undercrossing construction activity that may affect businesses and travelers.  Please note that every effort will be made to reduce the impact of construction on the surrounding area. Sand Canyon Avenue between Burt Road and Oak Canyon Road/Laguna Canyon Road

9-Day Road Closure May 10 – May 20, 2013 

A full closure of Sand Canyon Avenue will be required to allow construction crews to install permanent Metrolink tracks over the new bridge. During this closure, motorists will be directed to Irvine Center Drive, Jeffrey Road and Interstate 5 as alternate routes. Click here to view detour map.   

Closure dates are subject to change based on weather, field conditions or other operational factors.

Utility installations

Northbound and southbound Sand Canyon Avenue between Interstate 5 and Oak Canyon Road/Laguna Canyon Road

Wednesday, May 1 through Friday, May 31, 2013
Utility installation work will require crews to intermittently close lanes on weekdays between 9 am and 3 pm. Two travel lanes will remain open in each direction prior to 9 am and after 3 pm. No detour will be required since at least one travel lane will remain open in each direction during these closures.

Roadway excavation

 

Sand Canyon Avenue between Burt Road and Oak Canyon Road/Laguna Canyon Road

Wednesday, May 1 through Friday, May 31, 2013
Excavation work will be in place weekdays between 7 am and 3:30 pm. Construction crews will intermittently stop motorists on weekdays between 9 am and 3 pm to allow construction trucks to enter and exit the site.

The speed limit on Sand Canyon has been reduced to 25 mph between Laguna Canyon Road and Marine Way for the duration of the project for the safety of the contractor’s personnel and the motoring public.

The Walnut Bike Trail will be closed for the duration of the project.  Detour signs are located at each end of the bike trail to direct pedestrians and bicyclists to use alternate routes.
