REQUEST
Crown Castle submitted a Conditional Use Permit application for a new wireless communications network throughout the City. Crown Castle is a company that owns and operates shared wireless infrastructure. The proposed application is summarized below:
- Wireless facilities are proposed to be located on 17 replacement street light poles located along public streets. They will include two types of antennas: (1) a canister antenna mounted on top of the pole above the street light and (2) an antenna array containing three panel antennas attached around the light pole below the street light. Associated above-ground equipment include electrical meter pedestals, vents and equipment cabinets, which will be located in landscaped parkways. Underground fiber optic cables in the public streets will interconnect wireless facilities.

The proposed wireless network system is known as a distributed antenna system (DAS). DAS is fiber optic-fed telecommunications technology capable of simultaneously delivering voice and data signals to multiple customers of wireless providers. Since DAS is a low power system, the transmitted signal does not travel as far; therefore, wireless facilities are required more frequently.

Crown Castle is a wireless telecommunications infrastructure company that designs, develops, and operates wireless networks, including DAS. Crown Castle is not a direct provider of wireless services. Although the network is designed to work with multiple wireless carriers, only MetroPCS has agreed to use the proposed network if approved by the City.
